How Much Does Health Insurance Cost for Freelance Workers?

On average, the cost of health insurance for freelancers ranges between $200 and $400 per month, however, this cost may be lower or higher depending on various factors. For instance, freelancers who live in a large urban areas might end up paying more that $400 for full-coverage health insurance whereas those living in rural areas may end up paying less than $200. Additionally, your income level, your current health, and the size of your deductible may increase or decrease your monthly insurance payment.

Plans which offer more affordable monthly payments are usually what is referred to as a "high-deductible plan". While these types of plans do offer lower monthly premiums, if you do end up needing care, you will initially have to pay a larger sum out of pocket. Although these plans may be ideal for young, healthy individuals with no preexisting medical conditions, they are not recommended for those with chronic conditions or for individuals who require expensive prescription medications or regular visits to specialist doctors.
